06 · Process

From application to decision

  1. Submit the application

Complete the online application and pay the US$200 fee. Rice Business says its Admissions Committee begins reviewing once you submit and pay, and that it checks completeness and contacts you by email or telephone about anything missing.

Rice Business lists fee waivers in section 03.

  2. Preliminary reviewAfter you submit

Rice Business says the Admissions Committee does a preliminary review of your file and may then extend an invitation to additional assessments.

  3. Rice Video Interview and interviewInvitation only

The assessments are a Rice Video Interview on a virtual platform and an interview, which Rice Business calls a conversation between you and a member of the Rice Business community. It says that at this time all interviews are on Zoom, and it will share when in-person interviews are available again.

It says that if you get no invitation before decisions are released, this does not automatically mean it is no longer considering you.

  4. DecisionRolling

Rice Business releases decisions on a rolling basis from the dates shown for each round in section 04, and, for Rounds 2 and 3, may release them earlier if your application and review are complete.

It says it gives no feedback on individual applications after a decision.

  5. After admissionTo enrol

Send official test scores and official transcripts, and pay the $2,500 deposit due on acceptance. Rice Business says non-US degrees are evaluated by WES or The Evaluation Company, and an offer may be rescinded if the evaluation shows the degree is not equivalent to a four-year US bachelor's degree.

Rice Business does not publish a waitlist process on the pages we read.

07 · What you need

What goes into the application

1. Eligibility

Rice Business asks for an undergraduate degree: a four-year U.S. bachelor's degree or its international equivalent. Its Full-Time requirements list a bachelor's degree and professional work experience. It does not publish a minimum amount of work experience on the pages we read. Applicants can apply to only one Rice Business graduate degree programme per cycle.

2. GMAT, GMAT Focus or GRE

Rice Business requires a GMAT, GMAT Focus or GRE score. The table in its guide also shows the Executive Assessment as accepted for the Full-Time MBA, and MD/MBA applicants may submit MCAT scores. Only your highest score is considered, and Rice Business says retakes are not looked upon negatively. It states GMAT and GRE scores are valid for five years and publishes no minimum score on the pages we read.

If you retake after you submit, Rice Business asks you to tell it, and your application may move to the next round.

Full-Time applicants can request a test waiver through the Test Score section of an active application. Rice Business decides case by case. It asks for at least three years of professional post-undergraduate work experience and at least one of: a bachelor's or master's with strong achievement in a STEM or quantitative subject, a terminal degree (MD, PhD), a quantitatively oriented professional certification (CPA, CFA), or other graduate-level test scores such as the MCAT.

Rice Business says to submit a waiver request at least 10 days before applying, that a waiver is valid only in the cycle you obtain it, and that you need a score or an approved waiver to submit. Waivers are not available for Deferred Enrollment.

3. English test

Rice Business does not publish an English-proficiency test requirement on the application guide we read.

4. Essays and written responses

These are Rice Business's prompts and word limits as printed in its application guide. The guide says the Full-Time and Professional MBA programmes require two essays, and its program page describes two short answers and one long answer essay component.

Short answer 1 (required, 100 words)

In 100 words or less, please share your short-term career goals.

Short answer 2 (required, 100 words)

In 100 words or less, please share your long-term career goals.

Essay: Creative essay (required, 500 words or a video of one to three minutes)

While we know a picture is worth 1000 words, in 500 words or less tell us the story of a photo of your choosing that has significant value in your life experiences. Please feel free to share your photo!

Rice Business says you complete the creative essay as a written response (500-word limit) or a video response (one to three-minute limit). It does not say on the guide how a video is uploaded.

Essay: Re-applicant essay (required for re-applicants, 500 words)

Think about the time that has elapsed since you last applied to Rice Business. What actions have you taken to improve your candidacy?

Re-applicants also need new essays, new recommendations and another $200 fee. Rice Business's guide lists a 500-word optional essay for other MBA formats, and does not list one for the Full-Time MBA, so check the application portal.

5. Rice Video Interview

Rice Business describes the Rice Video Interview as invitation only, on a virtual platform, and as an opportunity to showcase your motivations for pursuing an MBA at Rice Business and alignment with its culture. Its guide does not state the length or the questions.

6. Recommendations

Rice Business requires a letter of recommendation: at least one professional recommendation, maximum two. Any professional recommendation is accepted, and it says it would prefer a letter from your current or a former supervisor. You enter the recommender's contact details, and the application system sends an electronic Common Recommendation form through the GMAC Common Letter of Recommendation.

A Build the Class referral from a current Rice MBA student or alum is optional, in addition to official recommendations, and qualifies for an application fee waiver. Rice Business does not publish the recommender questions on the pages we read.

7. Resume and transcripts

A professional resume is required. Rice Business says it should in general be no longer than one page, as opposed to an academic curriculum vitae, and the application also has a section for extracurricular involvement and awards. Send unofficial copies of every degree earned or in progress, with degree name and conferral date. Official transcripts follow on enrolment. Non-English transcripts need a certified translation.

08 · What Rice Business wants

It evaluates the quantitative and qualitative elements together to decide your overall fit with the programme. It publishes no weighting on the pages we read.
