All deadlines are 11:59 pm US Eastern. Stern publishes no interview dates: interviews are by invitation after review and are scheduled through the application status page. The Decision line shows Stern's initial-notification date, not a final decision date.

Initial notification is one of three outcomes: an interview invitation, a waitlist offer or a denial. Stern says deadlines tell you the latest date you will receive initial notification. If your application is incomplete, notification by that date is not guaranteed.

Stern says applications are evaluated by the same criteria regardless of the deadline met. It reviews on an ongoing basis and encourages you to submit between deadlines if ready. It encourages international applicants to apply earlier to arrange visas.

Stern does not publish an enrollment deposit date for any round on the page we read.

05 · Clubs and activities

Life outside class

Stern's Student Clubs page says students lead, create and manage nearly 40 school clubs, organizations and committees. The page lists 37 in three types. Its recruiter pitch in the employment report mentions 40+ groups across its MBA programs, which is not a like-for-like count. This page uses the list of 37.

The three types of club

Club typeWhat they are
Professional Clubs (17)Stern says they provide forums for students to hear from business leaders and offer opportunities that leverage Stern's New York City location and NYU's global network.
Affinity Clubs (12)Stern says they serve as professional, educational and social forums and celebrate the student body's diversity, cultural backgrounds and experiences.
Special Interest Clubs (8)Stern says they foster community at Stern through events that combine educational and social engagement.

Stern says student clubs welcome all members of the relevant community, regardless of background or identity. The Student Clubs page gives names and contact links but no description of what each club runs, so we list the names without activities.

Professional Clubs

Entertainment, Media, and Sports Association (EMSA); Entrepreneurship and Startup Association (ESA); Stern Entrepreneurship Through Acquisition (ETA); Family Business Club; FinTech Association (FTA); Gaming and Esports Management Society (GEMS); Graduate Finance Association (GFA); Graduate Marketing Association (GMA); Luxury and Retail Club (LuxRet); Management Consulting Association (MCA); Stern Healthcare Association (SHA); Stern Investment Management & Research (SIMR); Social Impact & Sustainability Association (SISA); Stern Management & Strategy Club (SMS); Stern Private Equity & Venture Capital Club (PEVC); Stern Real Estate Club (SREC); Stern Technology Association (STA).

06 · Process

From application to decision

  1. Submit the application

Apply online and watch the application status page for missing items. Stern says your application will not be processed until your application fee has been received. Stern reviews applications on an ongoing basis and does not hold them until the deadline.

You get an email confirmation after you submit.

  2. Initial notificationBy the date for your round

Stern tells you one of three things: an interview invitation, a waitlist offer or a denial of admission.

Stern says you may be placed on the waitlist or denied admission without being interviewed.

  3. Interview, if invitedAfter the invitation

The interview is by invitation only and is scheduled through the application status page. Trained admissions professionals who have read your full application conduct it, and Stern says all interviews are currently virtual.

Stern does not state the number of interviews, their length or the questions on the page we read.

  4. DecisionTypically up to three weeks after the interview

Stern says the outcome is an offer of admission, a waitlist offer or a denial. An offer shows as an online admission letter, including any scholarship, with access to the Admitted Student Website.

Waitlisted applicants receive waitlist information at that time. All Admissions Committee decisions are final.

07 · What you need

What goes into the application

1. Test score

The Full-time MBA needs a valid standardized test score: GMAT, GRE, Executive Assessment, LSAT, MCAT or DAT. Stern says it has no preference between tests and no minimum score. It considers your highest overall score, and for the GMAT the highest overall score from one sitting.

Scores must be valid when you submit. For the GMAT, scores 5 to 10 years old need an exception request, and GRE scores cannot be verified after five years. An unofficial score is enough to start review, and an official score is needed for a final decision. The reporting codes are GMAT and Executive Assessment 5TF-HW-35 and GRE 4455.

Stern has a standardized test waiver for Full-time MBA applicants of the 2026-27 cycle who hold a bachelor's degree. You send a request form with your resume, all transcripts (self-reported grades are not accepted) and a 300-word essay on your academic readiness. You can make one request per cycle, Stern usually decides within 3 weeks, and the request deadline is 1st Apr 2027.

2. English test

You show command of English with English as your native language, a degree taught in English, or a TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo English Test score. Scores are valid for two years at submission and Stern states no minimum. Stern says students who completed a university degree in India are not required to submit TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo English Test scores. The TOEFL code is 2582.

3. Essays

These are Stern's prompts and limits for the current cycle, from its Essays page. Stern says your essays must be written entirely by you, and that an offer of admission will be rescinded if you did not write them.

Essay 1: Professional Aspirations (500 words maximum, double-spaced, 12-point font)

What are your short-term career goals? Why is the Stern MBA the necessary next chapter in your professional story? Please be specific.

Essay 2: Personal Expression, also called Pick Six

Introduce yourself to the Admissions Committee and to your future classmates using six images and corresponding captions.

Stern says the Pick Six is a single PDF with three parts: a brief introduction or overview of no more than 3 sentences; six images that illustrate your interests, values, motivations, perspective and/or personality; and a one-sentence caption for each image. The images can be photos, infographics, drawings or any other images. They cannot be sent in physical form or linked to a website.

Essay 3: Additional Information (optional, 500 words maximum, double-spaced, 12-point font)

Please provide any additional information that you would like to bring to the attention of the Admissions Committee and/or give context to your application.

Stern describes Essay 3 as space for anything you want to bring to the Admissions Committee's attention or give context for, such as hardships, employment gaps, undergraduate record explanations or plans to retake a test.

4. EQ Endorsements (recommendations)

Stern calls recommendations EQ Endorsements. One is required and a second is optional. More than two is allowed but not encouraged. The required one must come from your current supervisor. If it cannot, you must explain why in the online application. A second can come from someone who knows you professionally and/or personally. Stern says immediate family members should not write it.

The endorser submits online. Endorsements are accepted only directly from the endorser. Endorsers rate you on several abilities and qualities and answer five questions: how they know you and your role; how your performance compares with other well-qualified people in similar roles, with examples; the most important constructive feedback they gave you and how you responded; one specific example of your emotional intelligence; and, optionally, anything else Stern should know.

A non-English endorsement needs a certified English translation, and the endorser can upload the original and the translation together as a single PDF, or email both to the admissions chair. Stern states no separate deadline for endorsements on the page we read. The application, including endorsements, needs to be complete by the round deadline.

5. Video or assessment

Stern's Essays page lists no video essay or recorded video assessment. The non-written part of the process is the interview, which is by invitation only.

This page does not cover the resume, transcripts, work-history entries, degree rules or the application fee. See Stern's application pages for those.

08 · What Stern wants

How Stern reads your file

Stern's employment report lists the school's four values as “Excellence, Unbound by Tradition”; “Radically Responsible”; “IQ + EQ”; and “Uncommonly Connected”. Stern does not set out weights for the application on the pages we read. These rows show what its own application asks for.

09 · Interview questions

What candidates say Stern interviewers ask

These are the five types of question candidates say they are asked, based on candidates' own accounts of their Stern interviews from 2021 to 2026. Nobody gets a fixed list. The tag says how likely that type of question is: high means it comes up in close to half of candidate accounts or more, medium in roughly a quarter to just under half, and low in fewer than a quarter.

TopicChanceHow it is usually asked
Your recruiting plan and school resourcesHIGH“What is your plan to land a summer internship and a full-time offer, and which companies are you targeting?” Candidates say this gets more time than why MBA.
Your resume and current roleHIGH“Walk me through your resume and what you do day to day.”
A Pick Six imageHIGH“Tell me about one of the pictures you chose in your Pick Six and why you chose it.” Candidates often describe it as the opening question.
Short-term and long-term goalsHIGH“What is your short-term goal and why that role?”
Behavioural storiesHIGH“Tell me about a time you made a mistake or failed and how you recovered.”

Candidates also report why an MBA, why Stern and New York, leadership style and what you will add through clubs and classes, all high. Plan B questions are medium. Candidates say the standard questions are sometimes skipped when your file already answers them.

Based on candidates' own accounts, recalled from memory. They show which topics come up, not what Stern will ask you.
