03 · Fees and scholarships
What it costs, and how to pay less
$83,946
non-resident tuition
Tuition is per academic year for 2026-27, in US dollars, as approved by the University of Michigan Regents in June 2026. The $83,946 is for non-Michigan residents and international students, and the $78,586 for Michigan residents.
Ross says 2027-28 tuition will be posted in July 2027 and is subject to Regents' approval, so tuition for the class you would join is not published yet. The 75%+ is the share of the Class of 2028 that received a merit-based scholarship.
Other costs Ross shows
| Cost | Amount |
|---|
| Mandatory fees | $246.89 per full term for full-time enrolled students |
| International Student Services Fee | $500 per term for students on F or J visas |
| Books and supplies | $2,000 |
| Food and housing | $22,276 |
| Personal | $7,360 |
| Loan fees | $224 |
The last four lines are Ross's cost of attendance guidance for financial aid, for Fall 2026 to Winter 2027. Ross's tuition page is inconsistent about which cohort the budget covers, so treat it as a guide.
The application fee is $250 and non-refundable. Ross waives it for several groups, including U.S. military members and veterans, and applicants who attend at least one Michigan Ross Full-Time MBA event before applying. Its application-requirements page lists the full set.
The enrolment deposit is not published on the pages we read.
Scholarships and funding
| Scholarship | What you get and who it is for |
|---|
| Merit scholarships | Ross says all applicants are automatically considered, with no separate application. They are awarded on admission regardless of round, and you are told at admission. Ross says scholarships range from $5,000 to full tuition per year, based on academic ability, professional and personal achievements, and potential to contribute. |
| Dean's Impact Scholars and Dean's Fellows | Full tuition. Dean's Impact Scholars also get an annual stipend for educational travel, leadership development and non-tuition expenses. |
| Fellowships | Awarded separately from merit scholarships: Forte MBA Fellowship; Consortium Fellowship for admitted students approved for Consortium membership, with funding from partial to full tuition that is not guaranteed; Health Innovation Scholars, which considers applicants who list healthcare as a career interest; and the Reaching Out MBA Fellowship, a minimum of $20,000 awarded on admission. |
| Dual-degree funding | Tauber Institute for Global Operations scholarships (no separate application), Erb Institute recruitment scholarships (apply after admission to one of the two schools) and Rackham Graduate School awards, which are mostly programme-nominated. |
| Ross Community Impact Scholarship | For first-year students with strong academic records and exceptional impact on the Ross community, up to $10,000 in the second year. |
| J. Ira Harris Merit Award | 10 incoming first-year and 5 second-year students are invited each year, for up to $7,500. It needs financial need shown by a current-year FAFSA on file and a moral commitment to give back to the J. Ira Harris Tuition Fund. |
| Other named awards | Skip and Carrie Gordon Scholarship (second-years, social problems; two recipients, $5,000 each), Leslie Adkins Endowed Scholarship (second-year Consortium members without a full-tuition fellowship; typically $10,000), True Grit (partial and full-ride awards for notable resilience), Zell Lurie Institute scholarships (rising second-years, entrepreneurship) and the Harris Scholars / Michelle and Corey Harris Family Israel Scholarship (partial, for Israel-educated students). |
| Yellow Ribbon Program | Covers unmet tuition for all eligible post-9/11 GI Bill students, with no cap since 2009. |
| Impact Advantage loan repayment | Up to $37,500 in loan support for graduates in social-impact careers (education, government, non-profit) in their first five years. It is open to alumni who graduated in May 2021 or later, and Ross says the application is currently closed. |
Ross does not publish an average scholarship amount on the pages we read.
Loans
| Loan | What Ross says |
|---|
| Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loan | For U.S. citizens and eligible non-citizens: $20,500 per academic year (maximum $10,250 per semester), through the FAFSA. Ross says international students on F-1, F-2, J-1, J-2 or G visas are not eligible for federal aid. |
| Private loans | Apply directly to a lender; the university certifies the loan, and Ross says processing averages four weeks. International students can use lenders listed on U-M FastChoice, with or without a U.S. co-signer, and some lenders require a Social Security number. |

All deadlines are 11:59 pm ET. Ross phones Round 1 admits between 9th and 11th Dec 2026 and sends official information by email on the afternoon of 11th Dec. Round 1 applicants not invited to interview get a waitlist or deny decision that day.
Ross says all rounds are evaluated equally, and that chances of admission and scholarship are similar in Rounds 1 and 2, while Round 3 varies from year to year. It advises international students that applying by Round 2 allows more time for visa processing.
Late applications roll to the next round, and Ross accepts none after Round 3. Ross does not publish an enrolment deposit date on the pages we read.
Consortium applicants have their own deadlines: 15th Oct 2026 for Round 1, which has passed, and 5th Jan 2027 for Round 2. Ross does not publish interview or decision dates for them on the pages we read.
Reapplicants within one cycle get a streamlined application and a waived fee. After more than one year, Ross asks for a completely new application. Ross's FAQ says it gives no application feedback before, during or after the cycle.

Ross says applicants hear about the interview timeline a few weeks after the deadline; invitations come by email from rossinterview@umich.edu. Interviews are by invitation only, and you cannot schedule your own.
For Round 1, Ross anticipated invitations in the middle of October 2026 (blog, 21st Sep).

07 · What you need
What goes into the application
1. Eligibility
Ross asks for the equivalent of a U.S. bachelor's degree from an accredited institution by the time you apply. It accepts a three-year regionally accredited degree from regions that typically do not offer four-year degrees, and its FAQ confirms that a three-year Indian degree is acceptable. Ross also points final-year students with no significant full-time work to its Deferred MBA pathway.
Ross sets no minimum years of work experience and no minimum GPA, and says almost all incoming students have worked at least two years. It says it looks at the quality of experience, such as impact and leadership, not the quantity. You cannot apply to both the Full-Time and Part-Time MBA in a cycle, or both directly and through the Consortium.
2. Test score or the Statement
You meet the quantitative requirement in one of two ways, not both: a GMAT, GRE or Executive Assessment score, or a Statement of Quantitative Academic Readiness. MCAT, LSAT, PCAT, DAT or OAT scores can go inside the Statement. Ross uses your highest total with its own section scores and does not mix sittings. Scores must be active at the time you apply, you may self-report, and official scores are required if you are admitted. Ross sets no minimum score and considers GMAT, GRE and the Statement equally.
For the Statement, the committee looks for rigorous quantitative professional experience, an advanced STEM or analytical degree, strong quantitative coursework and GPA, professional certifications such as CPA or CFA, or alternative test scores. There is no separate application and no pre-approval. Ross says applicants without a test score remain eligible for scholarships.
3. English
Non-native English speakers submit a TOEFL iBT (Ross code 1839), PTE, IELTS or Duolingo English Test score, or complete the Statement of English Proficiency in the application, for example with at least one year of English-language work in the past three years or transcripts from an English-medium school. You are exempt if your undergraduate degree is from an accredited institution where English was the primary language of instruction (Ross's requirements page; its FAQ says sole). Ross's FAQ strongly recommends PTE 70+, IELTS 7+ and Duolingo 120+. Its TOEFL figure there reads '5', which looks like a typo, so we show none.
4. Essays
These are Michigan Ross's prompts and word limits for the current cycle, as printed on its application-requirements page.
Essay part 1: Career Aspirations (required, 300 words)
What is your short-term career goal, and how do you plan to leverage the Ross MBA and its program offerings in your first role after graduation? Please be specific and answer both parts of this question.
Essay part 2: Impact and Growth (required, 200 words)
Michigan Ross is proud to support a community of leaders and impact makers who value growth. As a future member of this community, we want to know more about who you are and what drives you. Choose one of the following prompts to tell us more about what makes you stand out beyond your academic and work experience. List the prompt you are answering at the top of your essay.
- Think of a time something important did not go as planned. What did you do next?
- What is something you worked on for an extended period of time (over six months) that ultimately resulted in a positive outcome? What kept you committed?
- Share an example of a specific situation when your actions created a positive impact on your community or an individual.
Ross says applicants may use AI tools, and that essays should remain original, authentic and reflective of your own voice. You are responsible for the accuracy and integrity of everything you submit.
Reapplicants submit new required essays plus a reapplicant essay on achievements and goals since the original application. Ross does not publish a prompt or word limit for it on the page we read.
5. One recommendation
One recommendation on the GMAC Common Recommendation Form. A current or former supervisor is ideal, and a client, project manager or professional mentor are alternatives. Your recommender gets an emailed link from the application, and you can resend or change the recommender from the ApplyWeb homepage. Ross does not state a separate recommendation date; applications are due by 11:59 pm ET.
The recommender should be able to describe their interaction with you, say how your performance compares with other well-qualified people in similar roles, and give the most important piece of constructive feedback they gave you, with the circumstances and your response. Consortium applicants send two professional recommendations in the GMAC Common Letter format, shared with Ross, plus a mission recommendation that Ross does not review. Reapplicants within one year may reuse their previous recommendation.
6. Video or assessment
Ross's application requirements and FAQ pages do not mention a video essay or a written assessment. The interview is by invitation and typically virtual, per Ross's FAQ.
7. Other documents
A resume showing your education and professional experience with months and years, matching the application. Ross encourages community service and hobbies, and strongly suggests no more than one page. Transcripts and degree or diploma documents: Ross accepts unofficial ones at application, and official ones, with international ones through World Education Services, if you are admitted. The $250 fee is non-refundable.
08 · What Ross wants
How Ross reads your file
Ross says applications are reviewed holistically, and that no single factor (GPA, GMAT or GRE score, or years of work experience) determines the outcome. It publishes no weighting. Its admissions blog of 9th Oct 2026 describes four areas the committee reads.
| Ross looks at | In plain words |
|---|
| Academic readiness | Transcripts, major, academic trend, your test score or its alternative (considered equally), quantitative coursework and certifications. |
| Professional achievements and impact | Impact over quantity, career growth, and your supervisor's letter on work ethic, coachability and leadership. |
| Community leadership and personal qualities | Extracurricular and community involvement, interpersonal skills and self-awareness shown in essays and interview, resilience and a growth mindset. |
| Alignment with Ross and your goals | Your why: why an MBA now, and how you will contribute to clubs and the collaborative culture. |
Ross's blog also says the admissions team does not use automated formulas to sort applications, and that the committee personally evaluates each applicant. Its FAQ says it favours no industry, function or major.
See how your file reads against these areas before you spend weeks on the application.
Check my chances09 · Interview questions
What candidates say Ross interviewers ask
These are the five types of question candidates say they are asked, based on candidates' own accounts of their Michigan Ross interviews from 2021 to 2026. Nobody gets a fixed list. The tag says how likely that type of question is: high means it comes up in close to half of candidate accounts or more, medium in roughly a quarter to just under half, and low in fewer than a quarter.
| Topic | Chance | How it is usually asked |
|---|
| Why an MBA, why now, why Ross | HIGH | “Why Ross specifically, and what community values or programmes appeal to you?” Candidates say interviewers often ask for specific classes, clubs and community, and often ask why now. |
| Walk me through your resume | HIGH | “Walk me through your resume.” Some interviewers say they have read it and ask what you most want them to know. |
| Your questions for the interviewer | HIGH | “What questions do you have for me?” Candidates say this can take 10 to 20 minutes. |
| Working with people from different backgrounds | HIGH | “Tell me about a time you worked with people from different backgrounds or cultures.” |
| Failure, conflict and setbacks | MEDIUM | “Tell me about a time you failed and what you learned.” Candidates also describe questions on conflict, tough feedback and deciding with little information. |
Candidates say recent accounts lean more on ambiguity, setback and adaptability stories, and that a direct diversity question appears less often than in 2023 to 2025. Treat these as signals, not trends.
Candidates also report goals questions, tough-feedback and leadership questions, and now and then personal icebreakers, such as which superpower you would pick. Ross's page is the authority on the current format.
10 · Interview experience
What the interview is actually like
What Ross says
| Topic | What to expect |
|---|
| Invitation | By invitation only. You cannot schedule your own. Ross says applicants hear about the interview timeline a few weeks after the deadline; invitations come by email from rossinterview@umich.edu. |
| Who interviews | Ross's requirements page says a Ross alum, staff or current MBA student. Its blog of 21st Sep 2026 says alumni, current students or members of the admissions team. |
| Mode | Ross's blog says interviews are conducted virtually; its FAQ says typically. |
| After the interview | Ross says each application gets several more evaluations before a final decision. |
| Not published | The length of the interview, the number of interviews and any group element, on the pages we read. |
What candidates report
| Topic | What to expect |
|---|
| Who runs it | One interviewer and one round. About eight in ten accounts describe an alumnus or alumna. Fewer describe a first- or second-year student or someone from the admissions team. |
| Mode | Accounts describe a video call, mostly on Zoom. |
| Booking | After being invited, candidates say that once shortlisted they upload a resume to a portal, are matched with an interviewer, often by city, country or industry, and email them to book a time. |
| Length | Typically 40 to 60 minutes including your questions. Many interviewers say at the start how they will split the time. |
| Running order | An introduction, then the resume walk-through in many accounts, the whys, three to six 'tell me about a time' questions with light follow-ups, and a long block for your questions. |
| Tone | Warm and conversational in most accounts, often described as like networking with an employee or a colleague. Nobody describes a stress interview. |
| Your file | Interviewers usually have only your resume, and some describe a half-blind interview. Accounts do not mention essays coming up. |
Based on candidates' own accounts from 2021 to 2026. Interviewer types differ between accounts and Ross's page says who may interview, so use Ross's page for the current format.
