01 · Class profile
Who is in the Harvard MBA class
Class of 2027, the newest class profile on HBS's class-profile page. HBS received 9,409 applications in the 2024-2025 academic year, and the class has students from 62 countries. The page does not print the entry year. HBS has not posted a profile for the Class of 2028.
HBS calls applicants for fall 2027 entry the Class of 2029, so you would join a class with no published profile yet. Treat these figures as the most recent guide.
HBS also shows 10% first-generation students and 283 universities represented. Its average GPA is 3.76, counted only for US schools that use a 4.0 grading system. HBS does not publish an average age.
Work experience: the average is 4.9 years and the middle 80% range is 3 to 7 years.

HBS heads the first GMAT block 'GMAT Scores' and does not print the word Focus. It lists the block apart from 'GMAT 10th Edition Scores', so we understand it to be the current GMAT, though HBS does not say. Do not compare the two scales. HBS publishes no GRE total.
HBS follows the GME Admissions Reporting Standards developed by GMAC member schools in July 2020, and the page shows medians and middle-80% ranges only.
Programme and campus
HBS describes the MBA Program as a full-time, two-year residential programme. It says more than 65 percent of MBA students live on campus.

03 · Fees and scholarships
What it costs, and how to pay less
These are HBS's 2026-27 budget figures for a single student, in US dollars, for a nine-month academic year. The programme is two years and tuition applies to both. HBS shows only the one-year budget and states no two-year total.
The 50% is HBS's 'approximately 50 percent' of students who receive a need-based scholarship.
HBS's 2026-27 budget, single student, per academic year
| Cost | Per year |
|---|
| Tuition | $84,760 |
| Student Health Fee (HUHS) | $1,944 |
| Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) | $4,954 |
| Housing | $18,600 |
| Food | $9,400 |
| Transportation | $1,860 |
| Other living expenses | $8,800 |
| Total | $130,318 |
A computer, about $1,500 and variable, is not in the total. For students who are married, HBS's totals are $159,592 (married), $179,402 (with 1 child) and $186,312 (with 2 children), all with the same tuition.
Tuition and fees are charged to your student bill; living expenses are not. The Student Health Fee cannot be waived, but the SHIP part can be with comparable coverage. Off-campus leases often run 12 months, so you pay three extra months of rent.
Application fee
The MBA application fee is $250, non-refundable and paid by credit card only. Active duty military applicants are exempt. A need-based fee waiver is requested through a form inside the application, at least two weeks before the deadline, and HBS does not share it with the Admissions Board.
HBS's pages differ on the 2+2 deferred admission fee: two pages say $100 and one says there is no fee. This page uses $100. HBS also lists a non-refundable $1,000 tuition deposit for 2+2 only.
HBS does not publish an enrolment deposit for the MBA on the pages we read.
Scholarships and funding
| Scholarship | What you get and who it is for |
|---|
| HBS need-based scholarships | HBS says admission is based on merit but financial aid is awarded on demonstrated need. Awards are gifts that do not need repaying, from $2,000 to $87,000 a year. HBS offers them to domestic and international students and says they are alumni-funded. |
| How many get one | HBS says approximately 50 percent of students receive a need-based scholarship, averaging approximately $100,000 over two years, and 10 percent of students with the greatest need receive full-tuition scholarships. Its fast facts give $47M awarded in FY25, a $50k average annual award and $30k to $70k as the range for most. |
| How need is decided | HBS looks at gross income from the prior three years, assets, socioeconomic background and undergraduate debt, using a standard formula. For married students it counts part of the spouse's income and assets and a higher cost of living. |
| How to apply | Only after admission. HBS asks for the MBA Financial Aid Application, a Certification of Finances Form (non-US citizens and permanent residents), income verification for the prior three years, and the FAFSA (US citizens and permanent residents). |
| Employer sponsorship | HBS treats employer sponsorship and employer loans as outside scholarships. Students who receive them are generally not eligible for HBS scholarships. |
| Additional Harvard funding | Most are open even without need-based aid: George Leadership Fellowship (HKS joint degree, third year), Horace W. Goldsmith Fellowship (nonprofit leadership), Forward Fellowship (lower-income backgrounds with significant financial burdens), John H. McArthur Canadian Fellowship (students from Canada), Junior Achievement Fellowship, RISE Fellowship (service to under-resourced US communities) and Harvard University General Scholarships. |
| Summer Fellows | A weekly stipend between first and second year: Rock Venture Catalyst Fellows (your own venture), Social Enterprise Summer Fellows and General Summer Fellows. |
| Loan reduction | For private-sector employees with total guaranteed annual compensation at or below $130,000: awards typically $5,000 to $15,000. Rock Center Loan Reduction for Entrepreneurs gives $5,000 to $20,000, SELRAP $5,000 to $10,000, and GO:Africa and GO:Asia fellowships up to $50,000 initially (cumulative cap $150,000). |
HBS does not publish when aid packages are released or when aid applications open on the pages we read.
Loans for international students
HBS says international students can use private student loans, up to the cost of attendance minus other aid. A US citizen cosigner widens the options, but options exist without one.
HBS endorses no specific lender. A loan from a home-country lender, relative or friend needs a notarized loan agreement sent to the Kraft Family Financial Aid Office.
HBS says US-based lenders may not lend to students from countries under OFAC sanctions, and cautions those applicants to make their own financial arrangements.

Check my chances04 · Rounds and deadlines
Which round, and by when
HBS has two rounds for fall 2027 entry, which it calls the Class of 2029. Round 1 has closed and its decisions are due on 10th Dec 2026. Round 2 is the open round. There is no Round 3.
Round 19th Sep 2026, 12:00 PM ET
- Interviews:
- Invitations about four to six weeks after the deadline
- Decision:
- 10th Dec 2026
Round 25th Jan 2027, 12:00 PM ET
- Interviews:
- Invitations about four to six weeks after the deadline
- Decision:
- 25th Mar 2027
HBS publishes no interview dates or invitation dates for Round 2, only that invitations typically come about four to six weeks after the deadline. It says the process from deadline to final decision takes about three months.
Applications received after the Round 1 deadline are considered in Round 2. Applications after the Round 2 deadline are not considered. You may apply in one round only, once in an application year.
HBS says a round is a distinct period in which you may apply, not a step in a sequence. The pages we read give no enrolment deposit and no offer-acceptance deadline.
HBS also has a 2+2 deferred admission round for college students and full-time master's students, not for work-experienced MBA applicants. It closes on 28th Apr 2027, with decisions on 30th Jun 2027.
HBS's waitlist page still refers to the Class of 2028, so its dates are old. Its standing rules: the waitlist is not ranked, decisions are rolling, and withdrawing cancels a completed application.

Student Association
HBS says the Student Association is the main link between MBA students and the faculty and administration, and all MBA students are members. It has an Executive Committee, a Senate, a Social Committee, an office and section officers. First-year students elect the Executive Committee in February or March.
Its annual events include Orientation Events, International Week, the Holidazzle Ball, Section Olympics and the Graduation Gala.
Other student organisations
HBS also lists Disability (A Student Association at HBS), the First Generation Low Income Student Association, the Harbus (a student-run news organisation since 1937, in print and online) and student associations for the joint degrees: JD/MBA, HKS/HBS, MD/MBA and MS/MBA Biotechnology: Life Sciences.
Campus life and global experience
More than 65 percent of MBA students live on campus, and more than one-third live in HBS's five residence halls, which are for single students and assigned by lottery. HBS also names Harvard University Housing apartments for singles, couples and families.
In the January term, second-year students can take Immersive Field Courses: elective off-campus classes with team projects, site visits and guest speakers. HBS says 275 or more students enrol each year. It has 18 Global Research Centers and Offices.
06 · Process
From application to decision
Submit the written application
Submit everything online by the round deadline: transcripts, GRE or GMAT, English test if it applies, essays, two recommendations, resume, the fee or a fee waiver, and acceptance of the policies.
HBS says to apply in one round only, once in an application year, and that it will not consider additional materials after you submit.
Review by the Admissions BoardAfter the deadline
HBS says every application is reviewed in depth by the MBA Admissions Board.
Interview invitation
Interviews are by invitation only. Invitations typically come about four to six weeks after the deadline. If you are invited, you must take part.
HBS says the timing and format of the invitation do not affect your candidacy, and that invitations cannot be shared or transferred.
InterviewAfter the invitation
You register for one 30-minute slot with an MBA Admissions Board member who has reviewed your application, on campus, in a hub city or on Zoom.
HBS calls the invitation a positive indicator of interest but not a guarantee, and says more than half of candidates interviewed are admitted.
Post-Interview ReflectionWithin 24 hours
A written reflection submitted online within 24 hours of the end of the interview. HBS gives word guidance of 300 to 450 words.
Decision
HBS emails you on the notification date for your round, with directions to view the decision.
Admission is need-blind, and you apply for financial aid only after admission. The pages we read give no offer-acceptance deadline.
07 · What you need
What goes into the application
1. Eligibility
The equivalent of a US bachelor's degree from an accredited institution. HBS accepts international three-year bachelor's degrees as equivalent. It sets no minimum work experience; its Admissions Board recommends at least two years of full-time work experience before you enrol. HBS says work experience is typically full-time (35 hours or more a week) after your undergraduate degree, and that internships and part-time work are generally not counted. College seniors apply through the 2+2 round.
2. Test score
A GRE or a GMAT (GMAT or GMAT 10th Edition) score is a prerequisite for all applicants. HBS grants no waivers under any circumstances, sets no minimum score, has no preference between the tests and accepts online versions. If you take the GRE, you must complete the Analytical Writing section. HBS does not provide GMAT or GRE fee waivers. The GRE code is 4064; for the GMAT, search for 'Harvard Business School', 'MBA Full Time or PhD'.
Scores must be dated 9th Sep 2021 to 9th Sep 2026 for Round 1 and 5th Jan 2022 to 5th Jan 2027 for Round 2. You must take the test by the application deadline. HBS accepts unofficial scores at submission and needs the official report sent to it.
3. English test
TOEFL iBT (HBS code 3444), IELTS, PTE or the Duolingo English Test is required if you did not attend an undergraduate institution where the sole language of instruction is English, or if part of your bachelor's was not in English. It is recommended, not required, if a graduate degree was taught in English. Scores are valid for two years. HBS sets no minimum but discourages applying with TOEFL below 5 (1 to 6 scale) or 109 (0 to 120), IELTS below 7.5, PTE below 75 or Duolingo below 145.
4. Essays
These are HBS's prompts and word limits for the Class of 2029 application. HBS says the limits are maximums: you may write fewer words but cannot exceed them. It asks for essays that add to the rest of your application and are authentic.
Essay 1: Business-Minded Essay (300 words)
Please reflect on how your choices have influenced your career path and aspirations.
Essay 2: Leadership-Focused Essay (250 words)
What experiences have shaped how you invest in others and how you lead?
Essay 3: Growth-Oriented Essay (250 words)
Curiosity can be seen in many ways. Please share an example of how you have demonstrated curiosity and how that has influenced your growth.
Essay for joint degree applicants (up to 400 words)
How do you expect the joint degree experience to benefit you on both a professional and a personal level?
The joint degree essay is for HMS, HSDM, HLS, HKS and MS/MBA Biotechnology: Life Sciences applicants. Harvard SEAS (MS/MBA Engineering Sciences) applicants write an essay on past experience in entrepreneurship, design and innovation (recommended length 500 words) and may answer an optional essay.
The application also has a Post-MBA Goals section. HBS does not publish its prompt wording on its public pages, and we do not quote it.
5. Post-Interview Reflection
Only for interviewees, and required. It is a written reflection submitted online within 24 hours of the end of the interview, with word guidance of 300 to 450 words. HBS says it is not intended to be another formal essay and that it does not expect outside assistance. It says a reflection that looks produced before the interview will raise a flag. You reach it through the Post-Interview Reflection item on your Application Status page checklist.
6. Two recommendations
Two, submitted online by the application deadline for your round. You enter your recommenders' names and email addresses and they receive a link, so you do not need to wait for them before you submit. HBS suggests one should come from a current or recent supervisor if possible, and says how well a person knows you matters more than seniority or HBS alumni status. A former supervisor, a colleague or someone you work with outside work can write one.
Recommenders fill in a grid of personal qualities and skills and answer two questions.
Question 1 (300 words)
Please provide specific examples of how the applicant's performance, potential, background, or personal qualities compare to those of other well-qualified individuals in similar roles.
Question 2 (250 words)
Please describe the most important piece of constructive feedback you have given the applicant. Please detail the circumstances and the applicant's response.
MS/MBA applicants get an email with instructions for an additional recommendation.
7. Video or assessment
HBS's application components list no video essay and no timed written assessment. The only extra written task is the Post-Interview Reflection, for interviewees.
8. Other documents
A standard business resume or CV, with no formatting preference; the resume section has space to explain employment gaps of two months or more. Upload transcripts from all undergraduate and graduate institutions you attended. Unofficial copies are accepted at application and an official copy is requested if you are admitted. HBS sets no minimum GPA and does not accept transfer credits. International applicants translate course names into English and, if admitted, send official original-language transcripts to WES with an official word-for-word English translation.
The Activities section takes up to three activities in order of importance, and there are an Awards and Recognition section and an Additional Information section for special circumstances. All materials, including recommendations, are online and in English for international applicants. The $250 fee is non-refundable.
08 · What HBS wants
How HBS reads your file
HBS says its students are business-minded, leadership-focused and growth-oriented, in a class of 900 or more who bring as many different experiences and perspectives as possible. Here is what each area means for your application.
| HBS looks at | In plain words |
|---|
| Business-minded | People passionate about using business as a force for good, not only those from traditional business backgrounds. HBS looks for evidence of your interpersonal skills, your quantitative abilities and the ways you plan to create impact through business. |
| Leadership-focused | People who aspire to lead others toward making a difference. HBS says you do not need a formal leadership role, and that your impact may show most in extracurriculars, community initiatives or your professional work. |
| Growth-oriented | Curious people who are excited to listen and learn, through creative problem solving, active listening and lively discussion. HBS looks for how you have grown and developed and how you engage with the world around you. |
| Your transcripts | HBS says it looks at the whole picture, not just your GPA: where you studied, the courses you took and how you did. It sets no minimum GPA. |
| Your test score | HBS calls it just one piece of data among many. |
| The interview | HBS says its goal is to decide whether you will thrive in the case method environment and be a good HBS community member. |
HBS publishes no weighting or scoring formula. It says each application is reviewed in depth by the MBA Admissions Board, and that on school or employer reputation its goal is a class with a variety of perspectives and a wide spectrum of academic and work experiences.
See how your file reads against these areas before you spend weeks on the application.
Check my chances09 · Interview questions
What candidates say HBS interviewers ask
Five types of question that candidates describe, based on candidates' own accounts of their HBS interviews from 2022 to 2026. The interview is built from your own file, and nobody gets a fixed list. The tag says how likely that type of question is: high means it comes up in close to half of candidate accounts or more, medium in roughly a quarter to just under half, and low in fewer than a quarter.
| Topic | Chance | How it is usually asked |
|---|
| Your current work, company and industry | HIGH | “Walk me through what your company does and how you fit into its structure.” |
| Your file: specific lines, essays and recommendations | HIGH | “Tell me more about the failure you wrote about in your essay.” |
| Interests, activities and personal background | HIGH | “What do you like to do for fun outside work?” |
| Why an MBA, your goals and why now | MEDIUM | “Do you want to stay in this industry after the MBA, or pivot, and why?” |
| Where your industry is heading, including AI | MEDIUM | “How do you think AI will change your industry?” |
Many of the accounts are from 2022 and only a few are from 2026, so treat the newest years as signals, not trends. Candidates say the interview is fast, and one interview usually covers several of these topics.
Candidates also describe questions on business model, revenue and competitors, on leadership and managing people, and on career choices. Less often come being promoted, a weakness or failure, and anything you want to add. Why HBS in so many words is rare. They describe no formal case or guesstimate.

What the interview is actually like
What HBS says
| Topic | What to expect |
|---|
| Invitation | By invitation only. If you are invited, you must take part. HBS calls the invitation a positive indicator of interest but not a guarantee, and says more than half of candidates interviewed are admitted. |
| Who interviews | An MBA Admissions Board member who has reviewed your application. There may also be an Observer, a senior member of staff or the Interview Board, who writes a brief assessment. HBS says this is no advantage or disadvantage either way. HBS's logistics page says only the applicant and the Board member may be present; its FAQ says there may be an Observer. |
| Length and format | 30 minutes, a conversation tailored to you. You register for one slot. It is held on campus, in domestic or international hub cities, or on Zoom. |
| What it looks at | HBS says the goal is to decide whether you will thrive in the case method environment and be a good HBS community member. |
| Rules | Either side recording is prohibited. Using AI tools or software for transcription, summarising or note-taking during the interview is prohibited. A breach leads to cancelling the interview and withdrawing the application. Dress is business attire, and HBS does not assess your virtual background. |
| Moving format | HBS says an in-person interview can switch to Zoom if travel is disrupted, but a Zoom interview cannot switch to in-person. |
| After the interview | A Post-Interview Reflection within 24 hours, with word guidance of 300 to 450 words. |
| Not published | Round 2 interview locations and hub cities, the Round 2 invitation date and how many people are invited. HBS's interview pages show scheduling dates with no year, so we leave them out. |
What candidates report
| Topic | What to expect |
|---|
| Who interviews | One admissions board member in every account, often someone long-serving. A note-taker, scribe or silent observer appears in a small minority of accounts, mostly from 2022. |
| Mode | Many accounts are video calls and many are on the Boston campus. Video was common in 2022 to 2024, while the 2025 and 2026 accounts are on campus or away from campus. Campus days include class visits, a student panel and information sessions before the one-to-one rooms. |
| Length | Thirty minutes, usually held to the minute or a few minutes over. The pace is fast, roughly a dozen to twenty-five questions, and the interviewer often cuts in to move on. |
| Shape | No fixed script. A short greeting, then your current work and industry for much of the time, a deeper dive into one project or role, goals or why an MBA in some cases, interests, and a chance to add anything. |
| Your file | Most say the interviewer had read the whole file, including essays, a recommendation story, a hobby or a job before the current one. |
| Tone | Warm and conversational in most accounts, even though it is probing. Several candidates expected a grilling and did not get one. A smaller group found it neutral or businesslike. |
| The reflection | A few accounts mention it, with little on its content. One candidate wrote down the whole conversation straight away and submitted the reflection the next evening. |
Based on candidates' own accounts from 2022 to 2026, with most from the earlier years and few from 2026. Treat them as the long-standing pattern, and check HBS's pages for the current format.
